BATTLE BEAST
Interview with Eero Sipilä & Marina La Torraca
One story ends, another one begins. After 13 years, six albums, you have changed vocalists, firstly welcome Marina. Eero was it difficult to find that right vocalist?
Eero: “It definitely was. When we found out the news that Noora Louhimo was leaving, I was pretty devastated, and we were like who are we going to find that can pull this off? It had been a crazy year already. We had been working on the new album nonstop, and then that pops out, and we know we have a tour of 39 shows coming up, and how are we going to do this? The credit goes to the guy doing something behind us with his guitar pedals and he immediately got to work and started browsing on the internet for suitable singers. I can’t even say we did a short list but we were only starting to form a list, and Marina was the first on the list so let’s just test the waters a bit and sent her an email and see if she is at all interested. And true to herself she was. At the beginning of the search, I was almost desperate but you can’t imagine the relief we felt when we discovered we might have a singer and stuff after that has worked out super fine. We flew her into Finland and everyone got on super well, she really proved that she has great motivation for the job super high moral work and honestly they were the attributes we needed for this position because it’s not an easy position to step in”
Marina: “As a professional singer I’ve been doing musical theatre stuff and I knew alot of professional singers for everyone around me all the great singers I know said ‘what the hell is this setlist, this is crazy’ and it is, it’s really hard and you have to train for it as Noora did
Eero: She had plenty of practice and we did something short of 900 shows with Noora, and now we are starting with show number one with Marina, exciting times ahead.
Marina: But on the other hand, as I said, making the musical theatre parallel again whenever we practised for a show, there is a premiere, so for me that already needs to be good. So you take those months or rehearsals beforehand to get it to the level that is ok but it’s definitely not an easy set.
